At the end of the Spaceship Earth ride in Walt Disney World’s EPCOT theme park, you get to choose a bunch of options on the touch screen of your vehicle. After that a little movie plays based upon the options you picked. Then, when you disembark, you have the opportunity to email the video to anyone you want, including yourself.

I used this technology as a fun little “fortune teller” about my future employment, just to amuse myself. This is what came out.

No, I have no idea who the surfer dude is!

RED Stuff from Fort Myers Beach
as always, click the photos to see them bigger

When my buddy “Angel Wings” came into town a few weeks ago, it was my honor and privilege to pick her up from the airport and run her over to Sanibel Island, where she would spend a few whirlwind days making merry with some of her homegirls (party already in progress). But before we made the perilous crossing (aka, crossed the causeway to the island), AW wanted to stop off in Fort Myers Beach to get some shrimp. When we arrived at the Beach Seafood Market, I realized there was a bunch of RED STUFF in the form of signage, just waiting for me to immortalize it for RUBY TUESDAY posterity.

Here’s a handy reference, in case you want to stop for some shrimp, too. The address, as you can see, is 1101 Shrimp Boat Land. You take a left off Old San Carlos Blvd onto Main Street, which is just before the bridge that goes over to Estero, and then take a right onto Shrimp Boat Lane. They do pack the shrimp to travel. They roll the packages in layers of newspaper and you can buy a waterproof thermal-type little satchel to put ‘em in. AW already had one of those, but she was in such a rush packing to get outta Dodge, she forgot it, so she had to buy another. Well, next time she comes, she can take home TWO packages of Gulf shrimp!

So far, so good with our RED signs. Here’s one more. What’s wrong with this picture? I think it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when the sign maker does not know that “other” should be plural, and that “expense” is spelled with an “s”, not a “c”. Moreover, it would appear that the owners of the Beach Seafood Market don’t know how to spell “expense” either. If they knew how, they would not have put up the sign. Oh, and it gets better. There are MULTIPLE signs, all over the parking lot, all misspelled.

That’s my Ruby Tuesday for this week – RED Signs from Fort Myers Beach. I think I would like to go back there and just poke around taking photos for a while. It was really pretty down there, and there were a few shrimp boats on the water out in back of the Market building. I’ll have to figure out what time they are all in port, and go take photos of the whole fleet of shrimp boats (anyone else hear the voice of Forrest Gump in their heads – “But, Captain Day-un…..” – when they hear the phrase “shrimp boats”?).

Seems like it begins earlier and earlier each year. Your local retail establishments start hauling out the Halloween decorations in August, and the Christmas decorations before Halloween is even over. It’s ridiculous, already.

But when you have to decorate a place as large as Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, I guess some slack can be cut if they start a little on the early side.

These photos were taken on November 5th 2006. I’m standing up on the balcony of the train station, at the foot of Main Street. You can see that it’s barely 5 days after Halloween, but the Christmas garlands are already strung across Main Street.

No matter what the season, weather, or decorations, the castle is always symbolic of the magic in this place. It’s turrets and spires gleam in the Florida sunshine as they climb skyward.

Here’s a continuation of last week’s offering for Camera Critters. First up is a very brief video of a tank of anemones, with the star attraction, “Nemo”. I don’t think Pixar realized what they’d be doing for the clown fish industry when they released Finding Nemo.

 

  

 

I think that was pretty much all the usable footage I got from the Atlantis Aquarium.  As mentioned last week, we had a very pleasant afternoon there, and Niece No. 5 (age three and a half) enjoyed it.  Perhaps we’ll return next time I visit Long Island.

Atlantis Marine World is in Riverhead, Long Island (New York). It’s a nice little place to spend the day with children who like animals. It made a wonderful outing for me and Bro. No. 2′s family during my recent visit to Long Island. My youngest niece, who is three and a half years old, had a good time. Today we’re going to take a look at some photos I took of this aquarium’s shark tank. This gives me an opportunity to participate in TWO memes – Camera Critters, and Manic Monday with an “iron” theme. Oh, actually, THREE memes – Wordless Sunday/Monday edition, too!

The shark tank is themed as the place where some of the pieces of the “lost city of Atlantis” landed when it sunk into the sea. There are lots of columns and pieces of statuary etc. for the fishes to swim amongst. Yes, fishes – there are many more types of sea creatures in there than just sharks! In addition to sharks, we saw manta rays, eels, and a few of the characters from Disney’s “Finding Nemo” – most notably, a boatload of blue Dory fishes! The shark tank actually spans multiple levels of the aquarium. You can stand on the top level and look down into it, or else you can go downstairs and look through the glass wall at all who swim there. Here, we’re entering the lower level; hold onto your little one’s hand, because it is very dark, mysterious and cave-like down here!

Here we come to the part that satisfies both memes. We’ve got Critters and we’ve got Iron. Behold, I bring you all manner of fishy goodness, plus off to the right, there’s the cage with the iron bars which is used if you feel like suiting up and descending into the depths of the lost city to spend some quality time with the sharks, up-close and personal-like

Look, it’s a sea turtle! I sure hope Tootie is reading this, and my friend Dale/TurtleTrax too. And maybe Bobbie will come by and tell us what sort of turtle this is.

Due to the fact that I needed to pay attention to a very active 3 and a half year old during this little adventure, I took lots of pictures but did not mobile photo blog very many of them as the adventure happened (August 16th). So I still have other photos of this charming little aquarium to share in future posts.

If you have little children and find yourself on Long Island with a free day ahead of you, I can recommend this place. It’s in a pleasant, if out-of-the-way section of the Island, and if you go early and leave pretty much after lunch, the little kidlets will have the opportunity to fall asleep in the car on the drive back, getting a much-needed nap after a busy morning with the animals. Older children/teens and even adults might like to be adventurous and try the shark cage – hey, it could be fun, you never know!

At The Florida Aquarium in Tampa, there is a door near the cafeteria that leads outside to a cantina and a playground full of water fun for the kiddies.  And then there is this flight of steps off to the side.  If you go up the flight of steps, you find yourself in this little rooftop garden, with lots of tropical plants and a few benches to stop and rest. I thought the two hi-rise buildings looked kind of neat against the puffy clouds in the sky, with all the plants spread beneath them.

At the time of my visit (November 2007), I was still a smoker and I was grateful to see a few ashtrays in the oasis – this is apparently the ONLY spot at the Aquarium where smoking is permitted.  So, if you are a smoker and find yourself at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, look for the flight of steps that goes up to the oasis.

EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival, April 2005. The theme that year was “50 Hidden Mickeys“. Now, there are some permanent Hidden Mickeys sprinkled around Walt Disney World. In fact, someone has written a very popular book that describes how to find all the Hidden Mickeys – hours of fun in parks, guaranteed!

However, sometimes there are special circumstances under which additional Hidden Mickeys will appear for a limited time. The 2005 Flower and Garden Festival at EPCOT was one of those times. I’ve had these two photos waiting their turn for RUBY TUESDAY for a while now.

Here’s Pluto. Isn’t he handsome? In addition to standing in a flower bed full of red flowers, Pluto has another red aspect to him.

Rifling through my picture directories from the past 4 years or so, looking for suitable fodder for Ruby Tuesday (hosted at Work of the Poet by Mary/The Teach), I began to notice a pattern – Disney’s Ladies In RED!

First up is Disney’s most famous REDhead since carrot-topped Peter Pan – it’s Ariel, aka The Little Mermaid. Please notice that Ariel’s best friend, Sebastian the lobster, is also sportin’ da ruby hue.     Photo taken at Disney-MGM Studios, oops I mean Disney’s Hollywood Studios – May 2005

  Here’s one of my favorites – it’s my girl Mulan, a true Disney hero, with her faithful guardian, Mushu. She’s BETTER than a Disney Princess; she saved all of China from the Huns! Someday, I will treat you all to my feminist rant in praise of Mulan’s shedding of the trappings of femininity. But not today. This was taken in EPCOT outside the China pavilion, which is pretty much entirely RED on the outside, February 2008.

  

It’s Minnie Mouse, all decked out for the Flower and Garden Festival, with Mickey by her side in equal RED splendor.  Now, you have to admit that they are both stylin’ to the max as topiaries! EPCOT, April 2004.

  

Here she is, the other strong female non-Princess Disney character. She’s Mary Poppins, and she’s practically perfect in every way, right down to her use of THE power color, RED! Taken during a parade at the Magic Kingdom, May 2005

 

“Shift yer cargo dearie, show them yer starboard side….”   It’s the very famous “We Wants The REDhead” from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in the Magic Kingdom.  Photo taken October 2005.

Manic Monday

There are actually two things in this photograph that are “BIG”, which is the theme for this week’s Manic Monday.

First, and most obviously, we have the Big-Ass Hat, or to put it more genteelly, the BAH. Some look upon it as an abomination; one used to be able to stand near the front of the park and look down the main drag at the Chinese theater, which is an infinitely more pleasing and artistic structure. You can see a roof ornament of the Chinese theater peeking out from behind the BAH in this photo, just above the crescent moon.

The other “BIG” thing represented in this photo is Disney’s High School Musical franchise. The original production was an unexpected hit for Disney, and they moved quickly to secure the continued services of the original cast for sequel productions. That’s actually a float that paraded down the avenue and stopped in front of the BAH to entertain the crowds

A brand new SuperTarget has opened a mere 2 miles from my home – w00t!

Sunday was the grand opening. They sent me a bunch of product coupons in the mail, plus a $5 off entire order coupon. How could I NOT go over there and check them out?

Besides, RED is Target’s color, so I knew I would get not only an Adventure out of this, but fodder for Ruby Tuesday as well.

This Target has a grocery section as well as a gardening center. I have been waiting and waiting for it to be open!

Can you imagine – no one on the face of the earth has ever used this shiny-clean, brand new shopping cart – ever! I am the first. I shall try not to spill my coffee all over it. Notice that I also came prepared with my “save a tree, no I don’t want plastic” Target reusable shopping bags (that bunch of red cloth handles at the left of the photo).

I got a really good parking spot, despite the fact that there were already a lot of people there (I was a lazy lie-a-bed this morning). It was a good spot not only because it was so close to the store, but also because it was right by the sign that declares the parking lot to be monitored by video cameras.

I had a really long, excellent browse throughout the store, including the garden center where I bought some potted basil for the lanai. As I went past the Pharmacy, they offered me a free “goody bag”. When I got it home, I spread it out on the counter, and determined that it was mostly “travel sizes” of hair and beauty products, and these air deodorizer things which I won’t be using. I put those in the Goodwill pile.

So that was my big, exciting, excellent adventure this Sunday morning. It’s a big deal to have a Target this close, especially with the ridiculous gasoline prices we’ve been seeing. I’m happy too that there’s some competition for the local grocery stores. I buy Starbucks Breakfast Blend, whole bean, for use at home. At Publix Supermarket, it’s over $9 but at Target it is $6.79 (I stocked up and bought 4 of those suckers, just in case that’s an “introductory” price).

Is it really small-town and hick-ish of me to be this excited over the new Target? I come from NY, where there was a Starbucks on every corner etc., so it would not be such a major deal up there. But down here, this is BIG!

Next month, I’ll take you guys to the grand opening of the new Bed Bath and Beyond, in the same shopping center!

I was trawling through my photo archive, looking for a bunch of stuff I had scanned a few years back, and I came across a series of photos that I took in October 2004, while I was still living on Long Island.  This one, above, was serendipitiy.  I was working at my desk in the Suite @ Chez Bro, and I looked up and saw this scene out the window.  Wow!  So I grabbed the camera and flung open the window to get this shot.  I love the colors!

Feeling Better Now – Yeah!

Turns out, I have allergies on top of a cold virus, and a secondary bacterial infection. Theory is, because of the drought ’round these parts, a lot of allergens are not getting washed out of the air. They are just hanging out and blowing around and making trouble for people who haven’t had much truck with allergies in their lives before. We (the doctor and I) have figured this out because I was sick before the business trip to Columbus – recall that I did not go on the “Noah’s Ark” boat trip on May 16th – but while I was in Columbus, I was miraculously fine. I was also fine in Orlando – it rained there! But back here in Southwest Florida, I am not so fine. So, the theory goes that I am allergic to something here, AND I brought home some sort of bug from Disney’s Bacterial Kingdom.

I’ve got all these fine drugs now, and I’m feeling a bit better. Still sleeping too much, but a Z-pak will do that to me. However, I did have the energy to sort through the unblogged photos from the recent Disney trip, and I’ve picked out some to share with the world over the next week or so. Hope you enjoy them!

Wordless, Friday Edition

These photos were taken at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (fka Disney-MGM Studios) in Orlando, Florida on May 26th, 2008. In this section of the park, you pass under a fairly new archway that proclaims PIXAR STUDIOS. On the right is the new attraction called Toy Story Mania. On the left is the all-too-familiar wall that hides construction. These posters that feature the stars of the Toy Story films are pinned to the wall. Enjoy!
